As a child of the 80s I feel that my formative sense of romance was secured by the movies and music of that distinctive decade and it’s resonance throughout the 90s. Pretty in Pink taught us that boys could lip synch Sam Cooke songs in rad little record shops to woo us. Oh, Andie, why didn’t you choose Duckie? The Replacements penned masterpieces like “Within Your Reach“, bringing even the most punk rock girl to her knees in a swoon-fest. I mean, you just can’t beat “Cold without so much / Can die without a dream / Live without your touch / I’ll die within your reach”! I grew up thinking that boys sang songs to girls, and waited outside their windows holding up a boombox blasting incredibly meaningful Peter Gabriel songs because they couldn’t live without someone. Even the film Can’t Hardly Wait is named after a song by The Replacements, and High Fidelity deftly melds the love of music with the experience of loving, losing, and regaining a girl.
I really owe my entire stance on romance to 80s and 90s movie icons. Especially, John Cusack. From Sixteen Candles, to Say Anything, to Serendipity the guy has worked two decades typecast as the romantic ideal. I must admit I also owe some of my romanticism to my pursuit in seeking out great cocktails. Because, one can hear some pretty great love stories overhearing conversations whilst bellied-up to the bar.
Therefore, I am throwing a romantic, outdoor movie and cocktail party featuring Aviation American Gin Cocktails and a John Cusack double-feature. Where John Cusack is the classic American romantic movie actor, Aviation American Gin is a classic American Gin. A double-feature made in nostalgia heaven! And, replete with pinkish hued cocktails, because, well, I will always believe in true love and the value of romance.
