Cinco De Mayo holds a special place in my heart. Living in Central Texas its easy to get into the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, our cities and our culture are heavily influenced by Latino culture. In Austin you’ll often find austinites and tourists both attending tejano live shows. One of the more popular ones is held at the White Horse every Sunday.
When I first moved to Texas I only heard of but never tasted the latino influenced cocktail the Paloma. its a beautiful marriage of Silver Tequila, Mexican Fresca Grape fruit soda (pure cane sugar is used in this south of the border import) Fresh Lime juice and a pinch of kosher salt. Taking that cocktail and replacing the Tequila with Aviation American Gin makes for a perfect Cinco De Mayo cocktail. The lavender and grapefruit soda complement each other perfectly. It also lightens the Cocktail up to make it a perfect patio drink in the hot Texas sun.
So next time your in Austin, belly up to the bar at the White Horse
and get your two-steppin boots on and order an Aviation Paloma. This delicious drink is also featured at The League
where Bar Manager Brandon Turner has decided to put it on draft and muddle jalapeño into it to liven things up.
